Design and Technology
Key Stage 4
GCSE Design and Technology will prepare you to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. You will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. You will get the opportunity to work creatively when designing and making and apply technical and practical expertise.
A number of transferable skills are also taught within the curriculum that help prepare students for the world of work, such as critical thinking, presentation, questioning skills, adaptability, time management and independent learning.
Every student is personally supported in a nurturing environment to ensure that he/she achieves their personal best. Art lunch time clubs and enrichments help to promote the subject further during the school days.
Coursework and Exam Portfolio
How will you be assessed? There are two components:
Component 1 Portfolio: produce a sustained project and a selection of further work that represents the course of study. This is worth 60% of your overall marks. Component 2 Externally set assignment: there’s a separate externally set task paper for each title. It features seven tasks and you have to complete one of them. You get preparation time, plus ten hours of supervised time. This is worth 40% of your total marks.
